Based on the achievements and experience cultivated in music education over the past 40 years, Senzoku Gakuen College of Music sought to further raise the level of education for nurturing professional musicians by establishing the Graduate School of Music in April 2000. The Graduate School of Music offers Masters of Arts programs in four Departments: Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Music Pedagogy, and Composition.
Students can, of course, enter the Graduate School directly from Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. In addition, a system has been set in place that enables many students from outside the College to enroll.
The Department of Instrumental Music at the Graduate School of Music offers a curriculum with a great deal of freedom in which students can study a wide variety of advanced contents, ranging from solo to ensemble. This program, which places a strong emphasis on performance practice, provides a high-level, specialized education.
This program enables each student to pursue the achievement of their respective research goals, and nurtures these students so that they are acknowledged as musicians, instructors, or other professionals.
The objective of the Department of Vocal Music at the Graduate School of Music is to firmly grasp the theme and objective of the students’ research, as well as their individual personalities and distinctive characteristics, and nurture the students to make them capable of giving a highly appealing performance on stage. It is also the aim of this program to nurture students to utilize the skills they acquired in their studies not only to perform, but also to take part in activities in and contribute to international society.
The Music Pedagogy Specialization at the Graduate School of Music provides high-level guidance from the aspects of both theory and practice, and offers a curriculum that enables students to develop abilities in not only deeply logical thinking with regard to music and education, but also practical instruction skills, and to understand and increase their capabilities for expressing a diverse range of music in addition to western music.
This Specialization aims at nurturing each student, and developing them into instructors who are involved in some aspect of music at educational institutions or in the local community.
By giving advanced special education with regards to the latest theories, which advocate a music-oriented approach as the core of clinical practice, and practical techniques, the Music Therapy Specialization at the Graduate School of Music aims at nurturing outstanding music therapists who can contribute to society. Moreover, information available in Japan as well as from abroad is thoroughly studied regarding research methods that are constantly being developed in order to nurture therapists and researchers who are capable of substantiating the specialized nature and uniqueness of music therapy.
The Composition Specialization at the Graduate School of Music aims to nurture people and enable them to produce compositions filled with genuine creativity by having them learn exceptional composition techniques, which is accomplished by having the students undertake such studies as practicing writing and enhancing their ability to analyze musical compositions.
In the Musicology Specialization at the Graduate School of Music academic research is carried out from various perspectives on a wide range of questions related to music, with the aim of nurturing people to become researchers who are able to contribute to the development of musicology.
In the Music Design Specialization at the Graduate School of Music equipment such as computers, music creation software, synthesizer sound generator, and various sound equipment is used to refine both the musicality and technical abilities of the students, with the aim of nurturing them to become music contents creators or recording/sound technicians who are able to respond to the needs of the real world.
A program with a focus on practical skills for performances that studies music more deeply and pushes the boundaries of the paradigm.
This is a one-year program for students who wish to do further research in a specialized field after graduating from the Faculty of Music. The One-Year Postgraduate Course for Music offers programs in three Majors: Composition, Instrumental Music, and Vocal Music. This program also arranges a number of concerts throughout the year.
